SUFI ORDER INTERNATIONAL
HAZRAT INAYAT KHAN was born in Baroda on July 5th, 1882 and passed away in Delhi on February 5th, 1927. He was a preeminent Sufi mystic and master of his time, and an accomplished classical musician. As a young man his music was acknowledged in the courts of princely India, and he was at the same time a devoted mureed of his Murshid, Shaikh Syed Abu Hashim Madani of the Chishtia silsila [lineage]. In 1910, responding to the words of his Murshid to "Fare forth into the world, my child, and harmonize the East and West with the harmony of thy music," he sailed with his brothers to the West where he worked for the rest of his life sharing the universal Sufi message of spiritual liberty based on love and respect for fellow humans, recognition of the unity of religious ideals, cultivation of the art of personality, and appreciation of the sacred nature of music. The teachings of Hazrat Inayat Khan form the foundation of the International Sufi Movement, the Sufi Order, International and the Sufi Ruhaniat International.
The way of the Sufi is to view life in the light of one essence behind the surface of everything. That essence is revealed by all religions. |
To deepen the attunement at our Denver Sufi classes at Shiva Mandir, we will have 10-15 minutes of silent meditation before the class begins. Most of our socializing will be after class. If you arrive earlier, we will socialize in the living room until meditation time. If you arrive during meditation, just come in quietly, or if you prefer to chat instead of meditate, please go into the kitchen which will have the door closed. You are welcome to bring tea into the living room and enter quietly at any time. If you arrive after class has started, just come in!

What is Sufism? The word Sufi comes from a Persian word meaning wisdom. From the original root many derivations can be traced; among them the Greek word Sophia is one of the most interesting. “Wisdom is the ultimate power. In wisdom is rooted religion, which connotes law and inspiration. But the point of view of the wise differs from that of the simple followers of a religion. The wise, whatever their faith, have always been able to meet each other beyond those boundaries of external forms and conventions, which are natural and necessary to human life, but which none the less separate humanity.” — Hazrat Inayat Khan
